We recommend picking three places to fully enjoy your time.  However, it is certainly possible to visit more.

Santa Maria de Jesus

Visit the town of Santa Maria de Jesus situated on one side of Water Volcano.  Over 90% of the population are Mayan, wearing traditional Mayan clothing.  This is not a touristic town and will be an opportunity to observe the culture and everyday life.  Visit the market, central square, and church.

San Cristobal el Alto

This is wonderful example of how a community work together to develop tourism, health, and education.  The village offers treks of 2 to 4 hours, coffee and village tours.

San Juan de Obispo is a town set at the base of Water Volcano.

Visit this small town which was once famous for having the oldest Catholic building Central America and where the first Bishop of Guatemala lived.  You have the option of visiting the church and convent where you can take a tour for a small donation. San Juan de Obispo is famous for its artesanal products including Nispero (type of fruit) wine and Guatemalan drinking chocolate.

Pastores

Pastores is a small village which is famed for its leather goods, mainly shoes and boots, some of which include traditional Mayan colours and designs.

Hobbitenango

Travel by car into the hills outside of Antigua to the destination of Hobbitenango 2400m above sea level. You have the option of walking the final kilometer or taking a lift in a pickup truck due to the difficult terrain.  On a clear day the views are beautiful of the surrounding hills, farmland, and three volcanoes.  There is an outdoor café and restaurant and choice to trek a further 300 meters to a higher viewpoint.

Museo Casa del Tejido Antigua (San Antonio Aguas Calientes)

Visit the museum displaying Mayan clothing from around Guatemala.  The museum is by Mayan people.  As well as viewing the items on display you will have the opportunity to witness traditional weaving techniques.  If planning in advance it is possible to organize a weaving class or try on traditional Mayan clothing.  You will also have the opportunity to buy hand made products directly from the people who made them.

Valhalla Macadamia farm

Visit a local organic Macadamia farm, take a short tour, enjoy food or a drink in their garden restaurant.

Caoba Farm

Local Organic farm and restaurant. If taking the tour on a Saturday visit their weekly farmers market, enjoy live music, local food or take a tour of the farm.
