Sample Pacaya Volcano Tour

Pacaya volcano is one of three active volcanoes in Guatemala.

Please note that times are approximate and flexible to your preferences on the day or evening tour.

The times we have suggested on this sample tour are in the afternoon, however we also provide a tour where you trek in the morning.  At times of the year Pacaya has been more active and many have had the opportunity of viewing lava at night.

3pm Leave the house.

Drive 1 hour 15 minutes to the entrance of Pacaya National Park.

4.15pm  Meet with a local experienced Guide at the

entrance who will provide a guided tour. We work with

specific local Guides. It is obligatory to be accompanied

by a local Guide when trekking inside the park.

We will trek on the volcano and over hardened lava

from eruptions that took place over the past decade.

Our starting altitude will be approximately 1800m and

we will trek to an area of about 2300m above sea level.

The trek will take approximately 3 hours.  We will also

stop to roast marshmallows over the area of lava from

eruptions in 2010 and 2014.  There will also be plenty of

opportunities to stop and enjoy the surrounding views

and landscape.  We will return by a different route from

the one taken when trekking up so that you have a

greater perspective of Pacaya and its surrounding

landscape, which on a clear day you can view three

other volcanoes.

If there is an opportunity to view lava then we can offer an extended tour taking you further up the volcano.

8.30pm Following the trek we will return directly to Antigua.

If taking a morning tour there is also an opportunity to stop at the nearby Santa Teresita’s Hotel and Spa following the trek where you can enjoy their pools and thermal waters that are heated by the volcano. The entrance cost/spa packages are additional to the cost of the tour. The Hotel and Spa´s fees go from $20US upwards.

Additional information

We recommend packing suncream, hat, water, snacks, wearing good walking shoes, extra clothing for both warm and cold weather as it can quickly become cooler on the volcano due to windy conditions, and rain gear if trekking during rainy season. During the trek it is also possible to hire a horse for the trek or for an extra fee taking a pickup ride up part of the trail.

Depending on your preferences at the time of the trek, the hour you are on the volcano and the activity of the volcano the Tour Guide can bring you to a closer viewpoint of the lava if it is flowing that day.
